Since 1882, membership in the Knights of Columbus has been open to men 18 years of age or older who are "practical" (that is, practicing) Catholics in union with the Holy See. Since that time, the Knights of Columbus has understood "practical catholic" to mean a Catholic who accepts the teaching authority of the Catholic Church on matters of faith and morals, aspires to live in accord with the precepts of the Catholic Church, i and is in good standing in the Catholic Church.
Founded by a young parish priest now on the path to sainthood, the Knights of Columbus has helped strengthen men, their families, their parishes and their communities since 1882. Today, there are more than 1.9 million members of the K of C doing good across the world.
The Knights of Columbus stands as the strong right arm of the Church, and challenges members to grow in their faith through programs, fraternity and vital resources such as our award-winning magazine, Columbia, and many other exclusive member communications.
Principles of the Knights of Columbus
Fr. Michael J. McGivney, Founder
Our Catholic faith teaches us to Love thy neighbor as thyself. Members of the Knights of Columbus show love for their neighbors by conducting food drives and donating the food to local soup kitchens and food pantries, by volunteering at Special Olympics, and by supporting, both spiritually and materially, mothers who choose life for their babies. Knights recognize that our mission, and our faith in God, compels us to action. There is no better way to experience love and compassion than by helping those in need, a call we answer every day.

Venerable Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, in large part, to provide assistance to the widows and children left behind when the family breadwinner died often prematurely. The Orders top-rated insurance program continues to do this today, as do the good works of individual Knights, who gave more than 75.6 million service hours in 2017, illustrating how Catholics serve each other in fraternity and mercy.
Members of the Knights of Columbus, be they Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, Cubans, Filipinos, Poles, or Dominicans, are patriotic citizens. We are proud of our devotion to God and country, and believe in standing up for both. Whether its in public or private, the Knights remind the world that Catholics support their nations and are amongst the greatest citizens.
For over thirteen years Westbury Council 1012 has been offering financial assistance to students graduating from 8th grade who are dependent children or grandchildren of members in good standing of Westbury Council and have committed to further their Catholic School education by attending a Catholic High School. This year the Scholarship Committee received two qualifying applications and awarded one time scholarships of $250.00 to each applicant. Ms. Erin Cooper, granddaughter of Edward Moritz, who is graduating from St. Brigid's Our Lady of Hope Regional School and is registered to attend Sacred Heart Academy in the fall. The second award winner is Nelda Verna, daughter of Past Grand Knight Yonel Verna, who is graduating from St. Thomas the Apostle School will also be attending Sacred Heart Academy in in the fall. These awards were paid in June 2017
(Portions of this history were transcribed from the 1955 Golden Jubilee Journal on the occasion of Westbury Council's 50th Anniversary)

Our plans going forward
This year marks the 125th Anniversary of the Council Charter. We are beginning planning for a celebration to take place in June 2025.
We are looking to bring back some of our old council events such as the Council Christmas party and St. Patrick's Day party. In addition we plan to introduce new and exciting social events such as the Car Show, Music Bingo, and a Wine and Paint Night. More details are to follow.
